Making the video

Quick answer. The part that decides whether anyone watches. Openings that earn the next three seconds, how to shoot without appearing on camera, and why the equipment you already own is almost certainly enough.

The opening is most of it

A video that nobody finishes earns nothing, and the retention graph almost always falls in the first seconds rather than in the middle. That makes the hook the highest-leverage thing you can work on, and the cheapest to change: re-shooting four seconds costs nothing.

You probably do not need a face

A large share of briefs are satisfied by hands, a screen, a product and a voice, and some brands prefer it — footage without a person in it stays usable for longer and is not tied to one individual. Where a face is required, the brief says so before you film.

Equipment is the wrong thing to fix

The complaints that sound like gear problems are usually light, room acoustics or distance from the subject, all of which are free to fix. Gear is genuinely the problem when you can name the specific failure — grainy after dark, an echo in every take — and not before.
